New general purpose aerosol diluter: AD60


How often have you been running an aerosol lab experiment when you discover that the concentration of your source aerosol is far too high (or even maybe just a bit too high) for the instruments downstream? Many aerosol measurements require dilution to match the source to measurement instruments. Of course, you can lash up something using needle valves and HEPA filters, which will drift as the filters or valves clog up and requires precise control at high dilution factors. Or you might even have an off-the-shelf fixed-factor diluter, but what happens when you need just a bit more or less as the experiment unfolds?

Our new AD60 (launched at EAC 2024) offers users flexible and controlled dilution of aerosol at the tap of a touchscreen. The AD60 has a continuously variable dilution factor ranging from 5 to 800.

Cambustion has over 20 years experience with rotating disk aerosol diluters — first incorporating one into the DMS500 Fast Particle Sizer back in 2004, then later in the Dual Simultaneous Diluter for filter efficiency studies. We've been using prototype stand-alone aerosol diluters in our labs for a few years, and they've even received a few mentions in the literature and conference papers, see for example Symonds et al. 2018 (slide 5), Payne et al. 2018 (p3), Johnson et al. 2020 (figure 6, below) or Payne et al. 2022 (section 2).
