Applications Engineer

Products Group

Cambustion is an independent, privately owned company with headquarters in Cambridge, UK. Founded in 1987 to develop scientific instrumentation, today the company has two groups: the Products group and the Powertrain Engineering Services group, both working with customers around the world. We are a company of 70 people, founded from within Cambridge University Engineering Department.

This particular role is within the products division which has gas analysers deployed worldwide for air quality and medical research, and engine emissions. 

Applications Engineer

We are seeking an experienced degree level engineer with practical electrical & mechanical skills and good interpersonal skills to join a dedicated team who provide product support and applications advice to our existing and prospective customers worldwide.

The role will include:

  • Liaising with existing and potential customers, assessing their requirements and providing support to resolve both technical and commercial issues

  • Providing commissioning, training and servicing of equipment at the customer’s site (often overseas for multiple days)

  • Research and development of existing products, as well as assisting in future product design. Often analysing results, producing reports and subsequently recommending design changes.

  • Helping to develop data processing tools using Python or similar

  • Diagnosing and resolving problems with systems pre-dispatch and post- delivery (both remotely and at customer sites).

  • Attending international conferences to promote Cambustion’s products

  • The opportunity to work in a small, hands-on, fast-paced and flexible engineering environment

Required skills, attributes and qualifications are:

  • Ability to travel overseas (normally short-term visits < 1 week to mainland Europe, USA, Japan, China)

  • Good organisation, communication and interpersonal skills

  • Problem solving and troubleshooting abilities including patience and diplomacy

  • A good understanding of mechanical and electrical systems backed up by practical experience (IC engine experience would be an advantage)

  • Attention to detail and ability/willingness to write concise customer visit and technical reports

  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to the environment

  • Competent with MS Office applications

  • A relevant engineering degree
